Oh yes, she’s the woman if you want a proper posh Christmas tree. This is what I’ve learned from her.

Planning

We start planning our Christmas theme in June. I know! We are so restrained. Last year it was aqua and copper, this year we are warm lights and showing off our baubles. Knowing what you fancy stops you feeling overwhelmed.

Lights

Lights on first and if you want that sumptuous look you will need more than one set. Go for more than one set. You won’t regret it.

Depth

Stuff your tree. I’m not being rude. If you have a fake tree the gaps between the branches look like a dodgy tree rather than the beautiful negative space of a real tree. Don’t be having that. Ribbon, tulle or coloured netting can be weaved through close to the trunk filling that space. It will add depth and colour to the fairy lights.

Perspective

Put simply big balls at the bottom, little balls on top. You can mix it up because anything too uniform looks a bit municipal building.

Everything Is Decoration

If it will look good it will be on Jen’s tree. A white theme may be decked with feathers. Last year there was a cuddly flamingo nestled in her tree. Don’t worry that something is not a decoration, if you love it, display it.

It’s Not Just The Tree

Our mirror and mantle place is bedecked. The fanlight is home to presents and snowmen. Mistletoe hangs from the lights. The banister is full of fairy lights, foliage and fairies.

The Final Flourish

We have three trees this year. One topped by a crown, one with a fairy and the final one with a pom-pom star. My Mum would never forgive me if I didn’t tell you this. However you top your tree, it should be the final thing to go on and once it does, you are done. Step away from the tree and grab a Baileys.

[14
168,215
