We all like to think that we are shiny individuals and that our tastes and passions are unique. When you scratch the surface we all know that we are the product of many things and our worlds have shaped who we are. The world will give you knocks and bruises but also polish you until you shine.<\/p>\n

Music is one the most important things in my life and although my tastes are catholic they have passed on from a family and city filled with music. As the songs that were new and vital when I was a teenager are now classics, and I’m making the faces my Mum made at the radio, I feel the need to show my cultural history to the beloved and the monkeys.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
You want your early loves to be filled with the coolest tunes that show you were a connoisseur from the age of three, the reality is that you have a mishmash of comedy tunes, whatever your Nan loved and pop hits covering three decades.<\/p>\n

This is my (not exhaustive) list of songs I loved by the time I was five. Some are awesome, some are slightly embarrassing but I’ll make sure that everyone in this family can sing every word.<\/p>\n

And the opera. My Nan loved opera. She taught me how to listen and let the music take me to another place. I chose the music for her funeral and “Che Gelida Manina” was first on the list. We had a very difficult relationship but I knew exactly who she was. I got the music right and I’m still proud of that 15 years later.<\/p>\n
