My Mum has always enjoyed watching anything where friends are enjoying themselves. She likes to watch people dancing at parties, conversations between friends anything with camaraderie. This is the reason for her love of Status Quo and early episodes of Top Gear. I think she has passed this on.
I have fallen in love with Fortunately with Fi and Jane, a BBC podcast which is Fi Glover and Jane Garvey chatting. Proper chatting. Friendly, intelligent, mildly mocking and not so mildly mocking. It’s all over the shop and there’s a lot of talk about their bowels. I want to join in. All my friends could fit right in. Today my friend Cat and I dealt with Brexit, where to get good World Book Day costumes for a knock-down price (Sainsbury’s on 2 March – Paddington for 50p), enjoying spa days and the use of mushrooms as motivational treats, all in a 20-minute break in Pret. This is what I want to hear.
Also, in the episodes I’ve binged on the way they speak to the male guests is recognisable to me. It’s respectful, it’s witty and challenging. It’s not the arch, flirty, knowing scripted chat that you see in drama or comedy.
This podcast is 40 minutes with mates. It’s like having a cup of tea with your best friend while you put the world to rights while commenting on their lovely socks and asking what they are having for tea. Blissful.
