Paddington 2, Paddington 2, I am more than a little bit in love with you.
We took the monkeys to see Paddington 2 yesterday. I hadn’t seen the first one but this looked so lovely that I planned a family day out. Oh, Paddington 2! It was blissful even when you are being used as a comfy place for a rotating parade of monkeys to sit.
Paddington wants to buy his Aunt Lucy the perfect gift for her 100th birthday. While he is working hard to save up it is stolen and he is wrongfully arrested and convicted of the theft. On no! In prison, Paddington’s presence changes the atmosphere just a touch by his willingness to see the good in everyone. He escapes and goes to clear his name.
We sat on the back row in case the monkeys got excitable became less than code compliant. I shouldn’t have worried, apart from needing hugs at certain points they were great. I’m not sure whether bouncing along with the score pretending to be trains is a breach but we were all (of course I joined in) silent while doing it.
I cannot overstate its brilliance. It is warm and funny but not cloying. When we came out and the beloved’s response was “that was bloody lovely”. It’s a hug inducer.
Go and stay until after the credits have rolled you will be rewarded with a sight you will never forget.
