I should warn you before I start that I may gush about this film. That was your warning.
Pride is the story of gay and lesbian activists supporting Welsh miners during the 1984 miners strike. Doesn’t it sound fabulous?!
This is Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey on a massive scale. You have the prejudice and bigotry the LGBTQA+ community face, the fight of the miners against pit closures, the personal stories of coming out and family alienation, the spread of HIV/Aids, self-acceptance and the importance of finding your tribe.
By the end of the film, the ensemble cast look like mates. You believe that they have been through a long fight together. It’s air-punching stuff. Add Dominic West giving it his all on the dance floor in the village club and a soundtrack which gives you the best of the 80’s together with beautiful brass bands and it’s joyous. It will put you through the ringer, ignite your passion for a fairer society and give you the fizziest feeling. Watch and enjoy.
