Over the years I have carefully honed my beauty routine so that it is as unfussy as possible but I still look like me. Tonnes of black eyeliner, mascara and lip balm, or red lipstick when I’m making an effort. I love having a minimal kit as it is just the essentials with a pot of glitter in case I want to get fancy.
I like having a basic uniform for life. Navy dressers for work, tunic tops and leggings with trainers for a weekend. Add glitter to both for going out.
The well-curated makes my heart sing with joy. The simplicity, the utility, bliss!
There is one area where this approach goes out of the window. I have a bit of a thing for nail varnish. I have every colour you can think of. Lime green? Check! Black? Obviously. Red? What shade and be specific. Duck egg blue? Yup, including with the speckles.
I can’t and won’t give them up. I can’t streamline. Choosing and wearing nail varnish to suit my mood gives me the fizziest feeling. It is a small act of self-care and self-expression that can light up your day. Some days it is Passion Fruit, a gorgeous bright pink coral; some days it is Body Language, a strange warm white but whatever the colour it is always cheering.
