I have varied taste in rom coms (the phrase is the opposite of fizzy). I am all for the classic Ryan/Hanks combo with the preference being You’ve Got Mail. I love When Harry Met Sally. I am a Richard Curtis fan girl. All impeccable, I’m sure you’ll agree. I also love some dodgy 90’s Sandra Bullock films such as Hope Floats. You have to love a dance number.
The film I go back to is The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Janeane Garofalo and Uma Thurman in that classic tale of girl meets boy, thinks she isn’t attractive enough for boy, asks her model friend to pose as her, friend falls for boy, hilarity ensues. All this and a dog on roller skates. It’s a rom com with edges and vinegar and I love it. The true test of any art is whether it stays with you. I’m still quoting this film 21 years later. I tell people to make the carnage a little less up beat, that disappointment only maims and I will ask sales assistants if we are selling face cream or staging a coup.
On the days you need smart as fuck women, proper friendship and a dog on roller stakes watch this. Oh, and Ben Chaplin was cute back in the day.
