When I inevitably reinvent myself as a lifestyle guru, which seems to be the path to tread at the moment, I will charge people money to cover them with scraps of fabric and tell them that “magenta really chimes with their magnetic frequency”, then recommend that they repaint their front door, wear bright underwear and move on to my next victim, sorry, client.

As you can tell, I’m not a fan of people who charge for alternative healing approaches. I am a big fan of science and evidence. I was once told by a Reiki practitioner that I kept blocking his energy. That my friends is the power of a good eyebrow raise. Being totally open, I did have a session of Reiki once and I found it very relaxing. That may have been because I trusted the woman Reiki-ing me or the fact that I had a good nap under a soft blanket but it was great. If it works for you that’s grand, but if it has a whiff of snake oil salesman about it, kick them in the shins.

I digress, although my career as an alternative healer does not appear to be a goer, I am a big believer that colour can change your mood. We have a very colourful home because a minimalistic palette of white and grey would send me nuts. I follow a lot of interiors and home bloggers on Instagram. They show their gorgeous homes with dark grey or navy walls. Beautiful, stylish and so not right for me. I need colour and light to be happy. The bestie says that beige kills and she is right.

As it’s spring the inevitable home improvement season is upon us. In April, the beloved and eldest monkey will be painting our small galley kitchen lemon pie yellow. We are in discussions (we are a big family) to paint the woodwork in the hall turquoise and I’m trying to find wallpaper for the living room which will go with a purple sofa, a bright yellow wall and a grey and navy wall vinyl. So much fun!

The absolute best thing is our new washing up bowl. The bestie informed me of the existence of a yellow washing up bowl. Oh yes. Yellow. Mum went hunting in Asda yesterday and came home victorious. There is a yellow bowl in our sink and I did a massive happy dance. Mum said she did one in Asda too.

The small things add up and can make you incredibly happy. Don’t worry about what is on trend or momentarily stylish, live in a way that fills you with joy and have things in your house that make you happy. If that’s yellow washing up bowls your luck is in at Asda.

PS colourful knickers never hurt either!
