It’s autumn. I know this as the sky has gone grey, it’s bucketing down, the heating has come on and my mood has brightened considerably. I am built for this season.
Anyway, as my thoughts turn to seasonal hibernation I begin the hunt for blankets. This year I want a super chunky knit one. Yes, I know they are everywhere. Yes, my head has been turned by Instagram. I know.
That said look at these babies by Lauren Aston Designs! I’m not one for a tasteful neutral but if that flicks your switch, avast me hearties! Look at these colours! Gorgeous! You can have a massive chunky blanket in riotous colours. I swoon with joy.
Also, can I direct you to Lauren’s blog on not helping anyone copy her business? There was an air punch as I read this. I’m going to get political on this one. The world does not feel right at the moment. We are in a global period of change and our governments are acting in protectionist, self-interested, short sighted ways that value corporations over communities. Old sectors are shrinking, the gig economy is screwing people and it’s frightening. The way through this is to support each other. Support local businesses and start ups wherever you can. And there will be places you can.
If you want to start your own business, great. I support you whole heartedly. I will put out the bunting for you. Bunting created by wonderful people with wonderful skills. Your business should be what you do or create best, not a facsimile of what someone else does. Respect what other people have achieved and be you. If you need advice or support then look to your own creative community but make sure that you treat people’s successful businesses the way you want someone to treat your successful business one day.
Bill and Ted said it best: be excellent to each other.
